In August 2017, COMECA, in partnership with JM Conservation Group, organized a transformative three-day training for over 30 women from five sub-villages in Karatu District. The goal? To equip participants with essential skills in renewable energy, technology dissemination, and sustainable vegetable farming. This initiative empowered women and contributed to poverty reduction and environmental conservation.
The Importance of Renewable Energy in Community Development
Renewable energy plays a crucial role in rural communities, especially for women who bear the brunt of household duties. Access to clean energy like solar power can alleviate the dependency on biomass, which contributes to environmental degradation. This training aimed to raise awareness about the benefits of renewable energy in economic activities such as agriculture and food processing, thereby improving families’ livelihoods and protecting the environment.
Key Highlights from the Training
- Hands-On Learning: The program utilized various participatory techniques such as field visits, group discussions, and case studies to enhance practical learning. These approaches enabled women to grasp renewable energy technologies and apply them in vegetable farming and food preservation.
- Focus on Accessibility and Affordability: One major focus of the training was the accessibility and affordability of renewable energy solutions. While many participants highlighted the financial constraints in adopting these technologies, they recognized their potential in transforming agriculture and improving food security.
- Solar Dryers for Food Processing: A key outcome of the training was introducing solar dryers for processing perishable goods like vegetables. This extends the shelf life of food products and empowers women economically by enabling them to sell processed goods in local markets.
Addressing Challenges and Looking Forward
Participants identified several challenges, including limited financial resources and a lack of access to reliable energy sources. Nevertheless, the training reinforced the need for continued support in empowering women to overcome these barriers. By increasing their capacity to use renewable energy and modern farming techniques, COMECA lays the groundwork for sustainable community development.
Conclusion and Call to Action
COMECA and JM Conservation Group are committed to continuing this vital work in Karatu and beyond. With further support, these initiatives can scale up, ensuring more women access to clean energy, sustainable farming techniques, and improved livelihoods.
